From September 12 to 14, Sanxenxo will host one of the most anticipated events of the season, featuring eight classes, eleven countries represented, the Diputación de Pontevedra Trophy (6 Metre) and the Xacobeo Trophy (ORC), with a clear commitment to international projection and inclusion.
Sanxenxo will once again become a sailing hub with the 10th edition of the Rey Juan Carlos I Regatta – El Corte Inglés Máster, to be held from September 12 to 14 under the organization of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo (RCNS). Over three days, the Pontevedra estuary will be filled with sails and athletes from different generations and categories in a complete program including the ORC 0–2, ORC 3–4, ORC 5 and Open classes, Classics, 6 Metre, J80, Optimist and Para Sailing. In addition, the event will award the Diputación de Pontevedra Trophy for the 6 Metre class, the Xacobeo Trophy for the ORC fleets, and crown the winners of the Xunta President’s Trophy.
Following the international clinic being held this week in the Pontevedra estuary, the Optimists will be the first to take to the water on Friday starting at 14:00. As every year, it is the largest fleet and, in this edition, also the most international, with up to eleven countries represented on the starting line.
Luisa Sánchez, vice president of the Diputación de Pontevedra, stated: “For the Diputación de Pontevedra it is a source of pride to once again be present at this emblematic event, which has become essential in the national sailing calendar but is increasingly international. That is precisely why we framed the Optimist clinic within our plan to promote foreign participation. We will continue to support this type of initiative that builds the province, brings us together, and positions us as an open, dynamic and competitive territory.”
Also on Friday, starting at 16:00, the ORC fleets will make their debut, with the Xacobeo and Xunta President’s trophies at stake, along with the Classics and 6 Metres, competing for the Diputación de Pontevedra Trophy. On Saturday, competition will expand to include the Open, J80 and Para Sailing classes.
El Corte Inglés highlighted: “This new edition will bring together young sailors, veterans, and athletes in the adapted sailing category. At El Corte Inglés, in our support for sport as a way of celebrating values such as personal achievement, we want to emphasize—especially in this 10th edition—the importance of commitment to inclusion, diversity, and also visibility of disability. We want everyone to be able to enjoy sports, and sponsoring this regatta is a wonderful way to make that possible.”
Consolidated as one of the major events on the national sailing calendar, the Rey Juan Carlos I Regatta – El Corte Inglés Máster reaffirms in its tenth edition its commitment to pure sport, international projection, and inclusion.
Pedro Campos, president of the RCNS, explained: “Each year we try to ensure that the Rey Juan Carlos Regatta, thanks to the support of El Corte Inglés, Abanca, the Diputación de Pontevedra and Xacobeo, gains greater international appeal so that, as we have done for the past five years, many foreign teams get to know Galicia and the Rías Baixas, not only as a competition venue, but also for its gastronomy, its people and its hospitality.”
The village, the star of the RCNS evenings
The village of the 10th Rey Juan Carlos I Regatta will also take center stage over the weekend with the Xunta de Galicia’s “Galicia Sabe Amar” campaign. Each afternoon, after racing, several stands offering Galician seafood products and tapas prepared with certified ingredients will give sailors, guests and visitors the chance to taste the best of the estuaries. The activity, scheduled for September 12 and 13 from 19:00 to 22:00 and September 14 from 17:00 to 20:00, reinforces the social character of the regatta and the link between sport, gastronomy and seafaring culture.
