Sanxenxo is preparing for a weekend of authentic sailing with the celebration, starting tomorrow, Friday, of the 10th King Juan Carlos I Regatta – El Corte Inglés Master, which will bring together more than 180 boats from 11 countries in the Pontevedra estuary. Over three days, the event organised by the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo will crown not only the winners of the regatta, but also the winners of the ‘Presidente de la Xunta’ Trophy in ORC and J80.

The fleet of ORC cruisers from 0 to 4 will sail in divisions that will be finalised tomorrow, depending on the confirmation of final registrations. The races will start for them tomorrow at 4 p.m., with a maximum of six races scheduled until Sunday.

Among the participants are Mirfak, owned by Diego López and the CN de Ferrol, multiple winner of the regatta and the ‘Presidente de la Xunta’ Trophy; Nortemar Peperetes, owned by José Manuel Millán; Orion, owned by Alberto Javier Pérez; and two of the latest winners of the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy in Baiona: Urbapaz, owned by Franciso Edreira from CN Cabanas, and Deep Blue 2.1, owned by Vicente Cid. All of them arrive in Sanxenxo with their sights set on scoring points and getting closer to the final victory.

ORC Open will kick off on Saturday with two coastal races, one per day. Bonaventure from the RCN de Vigo and the Portuguese Saplicco Quinta Lamosa are the favourites.

The 6 Metres revive the spirit of the last European Championship held in Sanxenxo

The 6 Metre fleet, with six classic boats, will once again fill the estuary with history. Ian, Joy, Stardust and Alibaba II will be there, as well as the crews of Bribon and Titia, who on this occasion will be sailing aboard Erica and Acacia, respectively.

Both Bribon and Titia are already in Oyster Bay, near New York (United States), where the World Championship officially begins on 17 September. There, the team led by King Juan Carlos and Pedro Campos will seek to retain the world title they won in 2023 on the Isle of Wight (United Kingdom).

This regatta will be a good opportunity for the crew to work together ahead of the World Championship.

Mahou J80, a class with national champions

The Mahou J80 class, with six races scheduled, will once again be one of the most competitive classes, starting on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. local time.

Among the participants are Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, Jaime Barreiro’s Cactus Digital-Petrilla and Les Roches Solgreen, from CM Mahón. The boat owned by Pepequín de Orbaneja has Gran Canaria’s Javier Padrón on board, recently awarded the National Sailing Prize for the best monotype skipper of the season.

The youngest competitors will open the competition tomorrow, Friday, at 2:00 p.m. with the largest and most international fleet, comprising 140 Optimists from 11 countries: Brazil, Hungary, Puerto Rico, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Portugal, Turkey, China, Poland, the United Kingdom and Spain.

Quirónprevención supports Disabled Sailing

Volvo Balpersa Veterans, classics in coastal regattas

The Volvo Balpersa Veterans class will offer the spectacle of more traditional sailing in two coastal regattas on Saturday and Sunday.

Papanatas, owned by Andrés Froiz, will attempt to repeat last year’s victory. It will face, among others, Cassandra from CN Portonovo and Daikiri from the organising club.

The ‘Presidente de la Xunta’ Trophy will be decided in Sanxenxo

The great battle for the ‘Presidente de la Xunta’ Trophy will reach its grand finale in Sanxenxo. After the races in A Coruña, Ares, Portosín and Baiona, the regatta will decide the champions of the Galician high-level circuit in the ORC 0-4 and J80 categories.

Social programme: gastronomy and music in the village

As every year, the regatta village will be the meeting point on shore once the races are over. The Galicia Sabe Amar campaign will offer tastings of seafood every afternoon, along with traditional seafood dinners and, from 9 p.m., concerts. On Friday, the Chroma Group will perform, while on Saturday it will be Desconcerto’s turn.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., putting the finishing touch on a tenth edition that promises excitement both on and off the water.
